NAMU AMIDA BUTSU and PURE LAND BUDDHISM

Pure Land Buddhism, whose main current is also known as Amidism, emphasizes rituals and devotional practices towards the Buddha Amida. This Buddhist tradition is among the most widespread in the world and in Japan it includes the schools Jodo Shu (founded by Honen) and the Jodo Shinshu (founded by Shinran).

In these Buddhist schools the veneration is directed to Amitabha Buddha (Amituofo in Chinese, Amida Butsu in Japanese): he is considered the Eternal Buddha of whom the Buddha Sakyamuni spoke in many sutras (he is also named in the Lotus Sutra).

Nembutsu is the invocation of the name of this Buddha, which is recited as a mantra.
